What to Pack as an International Student (Updated 2026 List)

Share this:

Preparing to study abroad is exciting, but packing for a long-term move can be overwhelming, especially when you’re relocating to the United Kingdom, where the weather, lifestyle, and prices can feel very different from home.

This updated 2026 packing checklist is designed specifically for Nigerian students heading to UK universities. With this guide, you’ll know exactly what to bring, what to buy when you arrive, and how to avoid extra luggage fees.

  1. Travel Essentials (Keep in Your Hand Luggage)

These items should never go in your checked-in bag:
• Passport + Visa decision letter
• University CAS & admission documents
• Tuition payment receipts
• Accommodation contract
• Proof of funds / bank statements
• Yellow Fever card (sometimes requested on return trips)
• A folder for all documents
• UK SIM card (if you already purchased one)
• Basic toiletries for the first 48 hours
• Medications with prescriptions

Tip: Make digital copies of all documents and store them in your email + Google Drive.

  1. Clothing (Weather-Appropriate Packing)

The UK is mostly cool and rainy, so pack smart and avoid bulky items.

Must-Haves
• 1–2 thick jackets
• 1 waterproof jacket or hoodie
• Sweatshirts / warm jumpers
• T-shirts and casual tops
• Jeans and trousers
• Sleepwear
• Underwear and socks (thermal socks are useful!)
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Sneakers
• A pair of dressy outfits for formal events
• Gloves, scarf, beanie (winter essentials)

Don’t Overpack:

Winter coats, heavy jackets, and boots are usually cheaper and better quality in the UK, so you can buy those when you arrive.

  1. Toiletries & Personal Care

Bring enough for your first month. After that, prices are fairly affordable.
• Toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant
• Shea butter or preferred skin products
• Hair products (especially if you use Afro-textured hair products)
• Makeup
• Perfume (keep within airline liquid limits)
• Small first-aid kit
• Prescription glasses/contact lenses

Tip: Afro hair products are available in the UK but more expensive. Bring enough for 2–3 months.

  1. Electronics & Tech Essentials
    • Laptop + charger
    • Phone + charger
    • Power bank
    • UK plug adapter – bring 2–3
    • Extension box (optional but helpful)
    • Earphones / headphones
    • Portable WiFi (optional)

Don’t Bring:

High-voltage appliances (like irons and kettles), UK voltage may damage them. You can buy these cheaply at Argos, Tesco, B&M, Wilko, or Amazon.

  1. Kitchen Supplies (If Allowed in Accommodation)

Many accommodations provide basic items, so confirm first.

Useful to pack:
• Small non-stick frying pan
• Small pot
• Cutlery set
• Reusable water bottle
• Reusable lunch bowl
• Lightweight food flask

Buy in the UK:
Plates, cups, kettles, and toasters because they’re heavy and unnecessary to pack.

  1. Food Items (Allowed but Pack Light)

UK food is great, but sometimes you’ll miss home. Pack items you’ll need immediately.

Good to Pack
• Spices (thyme, curry, suya pepper, etc.)
• Indomie (a few packs; it’s available in the UK but expensive)
• Garri (small amount for emergencies)
• Ogbono, crayfish, dry pepper
• Milo, powdered milk (optional)
• Snacks from home

Do NOT Pack
• Fresh foods
• Liquids above 100ml in hand luggage
• Anything prohibited by customs

  1. Important Household Items
    • Bedsheets (1–2 sets)
    • Towel
    • Small sewing kit
    • Laundry bag
    • Hangers
    • Compact umbrella
    • Padlocks for luggage & storage
  1. School Supplies

Supplies in the UK are cheap, but here’s what you may bring:
• Backpack
• Notebooks (1–2 only)
• Pens and highlighters
• USB flash drive
• Scientific calculator (if needed)

Buy textbooks after school begins and many universities provide digital versions.

  1. Money & Banking
    • At least £200–£300 cash for your first days
    • A Naira card that works internationally (backup)
    • Proof of funds (soft copies in your phone)

You can easily open a UK bank account with:
• Monzo
• Revolut
• Barclays
• HSBC
• NatWest

  1. Optional but Helpful Items
    • Small prayer mat (if needed)
    • Waist bag
    • Journal / diary
    • Small souvenirs from Nigeria (for friends or flatmates)
    • Reusable shopping bags (UK stores now charge for bags)

Final Tips for 2026 Students
• Stick to 23kg per checked bag and 7–10kg for hand luggage.
• Roll clothes to save space.
• Leave room for items you’ll buy after arriving.
• Keep essentials easy to access at the airport.
• Check your airline’s exact baggage rules because they differ.
