An international student from Singapore, shares why she chose to study business at the University, where she is completing her final year of a Bachelor of Business

I chose to study in UK because it is relatively close to my hometown of London, which meant I was able to embrace a new culture while still staying connected to home. UK’s dedication to sustainability and tackling climate change, as well as its emphasis on work-life balance, attracted me.

Hertfordshire caught my eye with its stunning harbour views and amazing beaches. The city’s reputation for offering a world-class education, safety, a thriving business environment and great weather greatly influenced my choice to study there. This brought me to the University of Hertfordshire.

I grew up in an environment that actively supported me to pursue higher education abroad. I was inspired by my father, whose academic journey in business and marketing fueled my passion for study. Witnessing how he dealt with challenges such as the pandemic in the business world inspired me to follow in his footsteps.

In my opinion, business studies are the core foundation of any career path. As consumers, we are often active participants in this ecosystem through activities such as buying, selling and investing, often without even realising it.

The opportunities available at the University of Sydney are endless. In addition to the Marketing and International Business degrees, business students can take courses from other faculties such as Accounting, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Management, Music and Economics. This increases the flexibility of the degree and the skills that business students can learn.

In my marketing classes, I learned more about the complexities of consumer behaviour and marketing communications. Studying marketing and business has helped me develop skills that align with my long-term goal of becoming an entrepreneur.

My goal is to start a business after graduation. I plan to combine my international business skills with my marketing expertise, perhaps starting my own advertising or PR company.

I love the complexity of marketing and its ability to drive consumer perceptions and needs. It is interesting to understand its potential to manipulate and drive sales of a product or service.

This requires experience and connections gained through years of industry experience. So, to familiarise myself with the world of marketing and start making those connections, I plan to secure a management trainee position with a multinational company after university – it’s good to aim high and dream big.

My decision to study business was inspired by my family and to help shape my future career prospects. The adaptability and breadth of my business degree, coupled with the opportunity to gain practical experience during my university studies, will help me cultivate connections and pave the way for my long-term entrepreneurial aspirations.
