The UK Home Office has announced an increase to the Student visa financial maintenance requirement, meaning students will need to demonstrate access to a higher amount of money for their living expenses.
The changes were published in the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, HC 584, presented to Parliament on 3 September 2026, and the relevant Student Route changes are scheduled to take effect on 30 November 2026.
What Is the Student Visa Maintenance Requirement?
The maintenance requirement is the amount of money a student may need to show that they have available to support themselves while studying in the UK.
This is separate from your tuition fees.
In other words, when preparing your finances for a UK Student visa application, you may need to account for:
- Your outstanding tuition fees, where applicable
- Your required living expenses
- Other costs associated with studying and living in the UK
The amount required depends on where your main study location is in the UK.
What Is Changing?
From 30 November 2026, the maintenance figures will increase.
For Students Studying in London
Current Rate New RatePer month £1,529 £1,570
9 months £13,761 £14,130
This represents an increase of £41 per month, or £369 over nine months.
Students Studying Outside London
Current Rate New RatePer month £1,171 £1,203
9 months £10,539 £10,827
This represents an increase of £32 per month, or £288 over nine months.
The changes are part of the Home Office’s latest amendments to the Immigration Rules. The relevant provisions under Appendix Student are scheduled to take effect on 30 November 2026.

This update is particularly important for students who are:

London vs Outside London: Why Does It Matter?
The UK Student visa maintenance requirement is different depending on whether a student’s course is based in London or outside London.
This is important because choosing a university outside London can affect more than just your tuition fees and general cost of living, it can also affect the amount required under the Student visa maintenance rules.
For students considering universities in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Coventry, Wolverhampton and other locations outside London, the applicable maintenance figure is the outside-London rate.
However, students should always confirm the applicable figure for their individual application rather than assuming that a university’s city automatically determines every financial requirement.
Why Students Should Start Financial Planning Early
An increase in the maintenance requirement may seem relatively small when viewed month by month, but it can make a noticeable difference when preparing your overall study budget.
For example, under the new figures, a student studying outside London would need to plan for £10,827 for nine months of living expenses, compared with the current £10,539 figure.
For a student studying in London, the nine-month figure rises to £14,130.
That is why financial preparation should begin well before the visa application stage.
Start by creating a complete study budget
Consider:
- Tuition fees : Know how much your course costs and how much you have already paid.
- Maintenance funds : Check the latest UKVI requirement that applies to your situation.
- Accommodation : Research realistic accommodation costs in your university’s location.
- Travel : Budget for flights, transportation and other travel expenses.
- Daily living expenses : Consider food, phone bills, study materials and other regular costs.
- Emergency funds : Having additional funds beyond the minimum requirement can give you greater financial flexibility.

UK immigration requirements can change, so information you found online several months ago may no longer reflect the rules that apply to your application.
